Microbial digestion

The process by which microbes consume & digest the food (Organic Matters) is know as Microbial digestion. The microbes use organic wastes as food for survival, growth & reproduction.  They break down the complex organic matters into simplest form &  digest it by help of different enzymes,  Carbon di oxide, Water & Energy are the end products after metabolism.

It is a natural & complex process which occurs in presence of oxygen by the aerobic bacteria. Bacteria completely digest the organic waste & convert it into Carbon di Oxide.

Following conditions are required for rapid growth and reproduction of bacteria:
  • A water medium containing food (organic waste) for them to eat.
  • Sufficient quantity of Dissolved oxygen
  • pH should be neutral in between 6.5 to 8.5
  • Temperature in between 10-38 digee
The chemical reaction of microbial digestion of organic waste are as under- waste constituents:

                       Oxidation of organic matter:

CaHbOc ------------------Enzymes ----------------CO2 + H2O

                         Cell synthesis (cell growth)

CaHbOc + NHC3 + O2 -------------Enzymes ---------- cells + CO2 + H2O

                          Oxidation of cell material

(Cells) + O2 ------------ Enzymes ---------------- CO2 + H2O + NH3
